| Park Gains Green Flag Award | Lurgan Public Park has been awarded the Green Flag Award 2008, and is the first park in Ireland to do so. Following a rigourous judging process, the announcement was made on Thursday 17th July, and Lurgan Park now join a list of just over 200 parks from the mainland.
Organised by the Civic Trust the Green Flag Award is a national award that recognises the importance of green spaces and parks to the local community, similar to that of Blue Flag for beaches.
The Green Flag concentrates on areas such ensuring the park is welcoming, clean and safe, that facilities are provided for all ages, that staff are approachable, knowledgable and friendly and then environmental and sustainablity aspects such as recycling green waste and looking after the wildlife and natural habitates.
"This is a great accolade for the park and Borough Council and we hope to be seen as a leading example for parks in Ireland in the future." Leanne McShane, Lurgan Park Development Officer.
